Get to Know Debra Garee
Laura Morris, Communications Student Assistant

Debra is fairly new to campus, coming on board in the fall of 2008. Perhaps you’ve seen her friendly smile in Regents Hall or talking after class with students. As a newcomer to the nursing faculty, she brings clinical expertise and caring to the classroom.

How long have you been here at MVNU?
This is my first year as a teaching assistant and clinical instructor for the nursing program at MVNU.

What does your position entail?
I assist students in the clinical setting by taking the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom and laboratory settings and apply it to practice.

Are you happy that the nursing program became a full four year program at MVNU? Why?
I am thrilled that the nursing program at MVNU became a full four-year program. I truly believe that being nurse is a calling to minister to our patients. I am excited to be part of a program that teaches this.

Do you have any hobbies?
Reading, camping, and spending time with my 3 children.

Favorite book you last read or are currently reading?
“The Shack” by William P. Young.

Favorite season of the year? Why?
Spring, I love all the new flowers and fresh green grass.

Was becoming a nursing professor something you thought you would do while growing up?
I always wanted to be a nurse. I never dreamed I would become a nursing professor. God led me here and I couldn’t be happier.

What degrees have you obtained?
BSN, RN.

What is most fulfilling about your job?
Watching students take what they learn and reach out to touch the lives of their patients.

Do you work as an RN outside of MVNU?
Yes. I work as a RN at a long-term care center caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents.

What is your favorite restaurant?
Any Chinese restaurant.

Any big plans for the summer months just ahead?
Camping with my family. Helping at a wilderness church camp for fourth graders for a week in July. Working on 4-H projects with my kids; they will be showing dairy feeder calves and pigs at the Hartford fair in August.
